Here Comes Summer!

We had a great year in First Grade! It was fun! We have to say goodbye to our Twitter friends, and our special friends in Slovenia.

Here's what we are going to do this summer:
go swimming in my pool, go to Niagra Falls, go to the beach, play outside, go to FunTown-Splash/Town, use water balloons, go to Turkey and Switzerland and see my grandparents, get out my Bounce House, make new friends, go fishing, sleep late, go camping, run under the sprinkler, and read some good books.

Summer is fun, awesome, fantastic, terrific, super, magical, spectacular, ultimate, great, wonderful, and happy. We hope you have a great, happy, magical, knock-your-socks-off summer!

Our Trip to the Pond & Museum

 We found a salamander in the pond! When you touch a salamander your hands should be wet, because they breathe through their skin.

We did catch and release. We liked looking for things in our nets.

We made butterflies with our Art teacher.

TURKEY

Nar's mom is from Turkey and she came to visit to tell us about Turkey. It was very interesting and we like it a lot.

 Here is the Turkey flag. We think it's pretty.

 Part of Turkey is in Europe, and part is in Asia. 

 This is a silk scarf from Turkey. We learned that blue and red are popular colors.

 This is Little Red Riding Hood in Turkish. The Turkish alphabet has some letters that we don't have.

We tried to learn some words in Turkish.

This is a Turkish lullaby. Nar's mom sang it to her when she was a baby.

We wrote this song together. It's about the hallway.

CONGRATULATIONS TO MS PATERSON!

Ms. Paterson is our teacher from Colby College. She has been with our teacher for three years! She helps us with our Challenges, she teaches us games, she writes to us on our blog, she helps us with our reading and writing work, and she loves us. Ms. Paterson is a very nice, awesome, fun person. We are going to miss her because she is graduating from Colby and going to another school to be a teacher. We're very proud of Ms. Paterson. She is graduating with lots of honors because she worked very hard. She is going to graduate school. We wish Ms. Paterson lots of good luck. We love you very much, Ms. Paterson!

The Puppy by Ava

I  was  at  the  pet  store   to get  a pet and I got a puppy. I was going in my house with my new puppy. I was playing with  my puppy. We played  all   day .We bought  a bed for my new puppy.

Spring time by Rory

Spring is really pretty because there are flowers, trees, fruit and oranges and apples and grapes and purple grapes. There are birds and frogs and lizards and other stuff. You can eat ice cream outside and play out side. About the ice cream - chocolate, vanilla, strawberry all kinds of ice cream.

Yesterday  I  went  to Colby for a barbeque.It was fun. I got to play frisbee! I ate a burger. But I didn't get to finish my food because the frisbee was too fun ! Then the man who let us use it took the frisbee back . We had dessert . It was awesome!

Christmas by Talia

One day Talia was so happy because it was Christmas eve! "It's Christmas eve!" Talia shouted out. So mom said it's time for bed to wait for Santa to come. Talia said OK. Then Santa came! He is going to lay out the presents and Santa said Ho Ho Ho Merry Christmas!!! Then Talia said it's Christmas! They opened presents and played with their

toys.And they lived happily ever after.

The Kittens by Abby

There  once   was   a   cat   and  it  was  fat. It  was so  fat that  you  couldn't  hold   it. One   day   I went   to  bed and when I  woke up  I had  ten kittens! They are so  cute!  I  forgot  all about  it.  It wasn't  fat. It  is   skinny. And  now one is huge.

Apples are red and all juicy inside. Oranges are orange and BIG and round. Bananas are yellow all scrumptious. Grapes are green and split in lots more. Blueberries are blue and little. Plums are purple and sweet.

Making Polygons

What is a polygon? It is a shape that has straight sides, is closed, and the lines only meet at the corners, called angles.

We made polygons. We used straws and twist ties. We bent the twist ties and stuck them in the straws. We made triangles, squares, rectangles, hexagons, trapezoids, pentagons and diamonds. We enjoyed doing this, and we got to take our polygons home. 

Whales & Blocks

We explored ocean shells, seaweed, sea urchins, whelk eggs, sea horses, horseshoe crab, sand dollars, coral, star fish, or sea star in our ocean museum. We had scallop shells that were glued together. Soft animals with smushy bodies live inside these shells. Seagulls eat those animals, and so do sea otters. People eat them too. 

Fairy Tale Dress Up Day

We've been learning about fairy tales. We read a lot of fairy tales. Our class favorite is Hansel and Gretel. 
To celebrate we dressed up as fairy tale characters that we liked. We said a line that our character would say. We guessed who everybody was. We had fun!

April is Autism Awareness Month

We have a friend with autism. We miss having him in our class all the time. We are putting this blue light up for him. You can learn about autism here: http://www.autismspeaks.org/

Talia's Dragon Story

On Thursday my dragon was hungry. Dragon are you hungry? Yes. Okay, let's eat lunch. What do you want to eat? You want to eat meat? Okay. Now let's eat. Yum, yum! After lunch we had a... party! My friends are here having a party too. I said, let's have fun! We have a disco ball spinning around and making music. The Dragon said I like music. It's my favorite.

CJ's Dragon Story

One Tuesday my dragon was hungry. He found a sheep and a deer and a squirrel and he ate all of them. He cooked them with his fiery breath. I got burned. My dragon ate me!

Over the weekend my dragon and I designed homes for people and rooms for ourselves with mom's DVD on her laptop! She got the DVD from her faraway friend's sister. We used duct tape like this. We went to some stores like Pet Make Up, Camping, and Auto Store. It was fun too.

CrAzY sOcK dAy

We had Crazy Sock Day. Some of us made crazy socks. We colored on white socks. Julius sewed stuff on his socks. CJ used markers on his socks. Bree glued things on her socks - even hair! Some people wore socks they had with crazy patterns. Some people wore socks that didn't match. Nar used duck tape on her socks. Matt used markers and made Tic-Tac-Toes on his toes. It was f-u-n!

Ava's Dragon Story

On Wednesday my dragon came to school! Here we are - do NOT mess around, okay? Here is a snack. Stay! You can play for a little moment. You're done? You want to play again? School is done. Okay. Bye!

On Tuesday a dragon followed me home! Mom can I keep the dragon? He will make toast. He will make us dinner. So mom said yes you can keep him. The dragon made oodles of noodles for dinner. He cleaned up the dishes with his fire.


 

Bree's Dragon Story

On Tuesday my dragon said goodbye. He took me with him. We went to Hawaii and went swimming. We had a great time together. It was fun, FUN, FUN! We went swimming again. I don't know why his fire didn't go out. Then we had ice cream. It was so yummy! I'm going to live with the dragon forever!

Rory's Dragon Story

Over the weekend my dragon and I took a lot of milk and ice and sugar and a big, big, BIG bowl. We put the ingredients all in the bowl and mixed it all up and we made ice cream. We swam in it and jumped in it too. We got ice cream in our underwear. It was cold! We ate a lot of ice cream. Our bellies were grumbling so much we couldn't eat anything until October. When mom came in it was a mess! The dragon melted it all and we drank it. It was flavored water. It was good.

Over the weekend my dragon and I went back to his cave. My dragon gave me a sapphire necklace and I gave him a big hug and we went home. I gave him a diamond ring with real diamonds. My dragon smiled and wrapped his tail around me and gave me a hug. We ate a special dinner.

On Tuesday a dragon followed me home. Aunty can I have a dragon? 
No, of course not! 
It will cook you breakfast. 
Okay, but just for one night. 
Why can't we keep him forever? 
Because he is a dragon! 
Well that is a good reason. But it will fly me to school and it will stay in my room. 
I guess you can keep it. 
Thank you for letting me keep the dragon.
Who wants a dragon? I want a dragon! 

 

My Dragon Story by Reana

On Thursday my dragon was hungry. I cooked him some cold toast and then he warmed it up with his hot breath. Then he wanted some more, so I gave him some more. Then he did not want any more, so he took a little while and then he was getting hungry again. He came and told me and I gave him more toast. Then he went to sleep.

On Tuesday a dragon followed me home! He makes toast. He can keep the house warm. Can I keep it? Auntie Betty said no, and my dragon ate her!

On Thursday my dragon was hungry. I gave him turkey and meat and bones and my bed. Then he was sick. Then he went to the bathroom. I did not care. Then he went to bed and he cuddled me and his bear. Sleep tight, dragon!

My Dragon by Abby

On Thursday my dragon was hungry. So I went to the store and I got everything in it. I came home and I cooked dinner for him and me. I gave him everything I bought, and he ate everything! I was glad and I said that I was going to do that again. I said thank you for eating everything. "Now I will take a nap,"  said the dragon. I woke the dragon up. I was very happy and when I was tired  I took a nap with my dragon  and he woke me up. When he woke me up I went to my own bed. My dragon slept with me. Good night!

On Thursday my dragon was hungry. I brought him to Mr. Daily's home. And my dragon ate him. I said, "Spit him out!" Then I said, "Sorry. Can you make some bacon?" He said yes. It took 2 hours. My dragon was sleeping. His smoke burned the house. It got on fire. At least the bacon is done! We went home and had dinner at my home. Then the dragon went to sleep.

I used 100 legos  and   made   a  truck. My  mom   helped  me   and   my   sister   helped me  too.

The Polar Regions

We are learning about the Polar Regions. Here's what we learned:

ARCTIC
The Arctic is frozen ocean. It is very cold. It is also called the North Pole. Polar bears live there. Some other animals that live there are whales, narwhals, snowy owls, puffins, lemmings, seals, arctic fox, snowshoe hares, and wolves. We live close to the Arctic circle.

ANTARCTICA
Antarctica is a continent. It is frozen land. It is even colder than the Arctic. It is the coldest place on earth. Peguins live there. They have never seen polar bears. Only scientists live in Antarctica because it is too cold. 

Both places are have sunshine all the time for 6 months, and darkness all the time for 6 months. We can't imagine playing on our playground in the dark, or going to school in the dark.

I  used  100   popsicle sticks and made a tool box! My mom helped me.

Happy 100 Day Rory

I used 100 pompoms and made a rainbow. My mom and Meme put the hot glue gun on.

Julius

I used 100 stickers  and  Carter  helped and Mom too. I  made  a safari  and a pirate cove.

Nar

I    used   100    grains    of        rice       and       made        a         musical        egg  shaker, with   my   mom.

Bree

I used 100 Legos  and made  a  house.   I    did  it  by  myself.                                       

Kara

I  used  100  hearts and  made big heart.  My  mom helped me.

Abby

I used 100 pieces of candy and made a heart. My dad helped.
