Tomato Horn Worms

These are Tomato Horn Worms. They are mostly green with a white stripe and they have a spike. You shouldn't touch the spike. On the side of them it looks like eyes. They feel comfortable and soft when you hold them. They eat tomato plants. I went to my friend's garden to catch them. One was making a cocoon. It will hatch into a hummingbird moth.  I just found a baby one too. My baby one doesn't have a spike yet.

Oh my goodness! I remember these worms in our garden when I was growing up. I haven't seen them in a long, long time! Why should you stay away from the spike?

Wow, I didn't know that worms ate tomato plants. Do they eat the stem and leafy plant part or just the tomatoes? You must have fun learning about things like worms.

Hello to all of you! I am a teacher in southern California and I found your blog through a message your teacher put on Twitter. I am happy to have found such a neat first-grade blog! It looks like you are learning some really interesting things!

I think those worms are definitely very cute, but I don't like it when I find them in my tomatoes! I do like it when they spin their cocoons because it is amazing to see their metamorphosis. Have you learned that word already?

Dear Ms. DeSelm,
You have to watch out for the spike because it can hurt you.
Thank you for reading my post!

Dear Ms. Tatiana,
California! You are all the way across the country!
Metamorphosis means it going to change into a moth or butterfly from a caterpillar. It's fun to watch.
