Dr. Reynold's Visit

Dr. Reynolds is a geologist and she came to our classroom to teach us about rocks. We each brought a rock to school. Dr. Reynolds told us what kind of rock it was. She gave us each a crystal of white quartz. She brought us cool rocks to look at and touch. It was amazing! Some rocks felt smooth and some rocks felt rough. The rocks were lots of different colors and shapes. They looked neat. One of them looked like it had an eye! One of them had a heart-shaped shell in it. There is a rock called fluoride and it goes in toothpaste.
Thank you Dr. Reynolds - we had a great time! We learned a lot too.

I am glad that you had such an interesting guest come to your classroom. I never knew that the fluoride in my toothpaste came from a rock.
You are learning interesting and fun things. I hope you enjoy your friends in France. I think it is neat to learn how many things we share with our friends around the world.

I'm glad everyone enjoyed the visit. I especially enjoyed the photos of the children touching the samples since I didn't get to see them do this while I was there. Believe it or not, anything you don't eat probably comes from a rock. Happy rock hunting!

Dr. Reynolds,
Are the tables in our classroom really made from rocks? Do our clothes come from rocks? We are curious.

Great questions! Plastic goes into a lot of things we use. If I remember correctly, your tables have plastic tops? Plastic is made from the same raw materials as oil. The oil comes out of rocks in the ground and part of it goes into making plastic. Fleece jackets are also made of plastic. You could make a single jacket out of 25 2-liter plastic bottles! The metal legs of the tables are probably made of steel, which is made of iron, which comes from a rock!

This looks like such an awesome experience! I am taking a geology class to learn about rocks, just like you all did! My favorite rocks to look at are fossils, like the one with the heart-shaped shell in it that Dr. Reynolds showed you!
